Jakarta. A major earthquake off the coast of North Sumatra has caused widespread panic and electricity blackouts across the Indonesian province as residents rushed to higher ground. But sea levels rose only 46 centimetres after the quake, the Indonesian meteorology agency said, prompting it to withdraw a tsunami warning. Indonesian agencies reported that the quake struck just before 5.15am local time (8.15am AEST) at a depth of 31 kilometres and about 204 kilometres off the coast of Sibolga, between the islands of Simeulue and Nias.
